Wild Bird Food →

Seed mixes, straights, peanuts, suet balls and fat cakes for garden birds, in sizes from a single feeder fill to a sack that lasts the winter.

Choosing wild bird food

Start by deciding between mixes and straights. A mixed seed brings a wide range of visitors, and no-mess mixes made from hulled seed leave no husks under the feeder, which suits patios and lawns. Straights target particular birds: sunflower hearts and black sunflower seed suit many species, nyjer is a small oily seed favoured by goldfinches that needs a feeder with fine ports, and peanuts should be fed from a mesh feeder.

Fat-based foods are the winter staple. Suet balls, cakes, blocks and pellets give birds concentrated energy when it is cold, and versions with mealworms or insects appeal to tits, robins and starlings. Bird butters spread into logs and bark feeders. Seasonal blends such as spring and summer mixes differ from winter energy mixes, so check the label for the time of year, and look for wheat-free recipes if you want less filler.

Common questions

What seed attracts the most garden birds?

Sunflower hearts and a good-quality mixed seed attract the widest range, from finches and sparrows to tits and robins. Add a suet feeder for woodland birds, and nyjer in a dedicated feeder for goldfinches. Offering more than one type of food usually brings the most variety.

Should I feed garden birds all year?

Yes, you can. Winter is when extra energy helps most, but birds also visit in spring and summer, so use a blend suited to the season. Keep feeders topped up in cold weather, because birds come to rely on regular spots.

Are fat balls safe in nets?

Plastic netting can trap a bird's feet or beak, so it is better to take the net off and use the fat ball in a feeder designed to hold it. Many suet balls and cakes now come without netting, which avoids the problem entirely.

How do I keep feeders clean?

Empty out old or damp food, scrub the feeder with hot soapy water or a mild disinfectant, rinse well and let it dry before refilling. Doing this regularly, and moving feeders occasionally, helps to keep disease from spreading between birds.
