A seed mix aimed at attracting "the widest variety of birds while using one type of feed" has to solve a genuine tension — small-seed feeders and big-beaked visitors don't usually want the same thing, and this mix tries to cover both.

Johnston & Jeff Selected Wild Bird Food combines wheat, black oil sunflower, split maize, red dari, various small seeds, natural groats, white millet and vegetable oil. Typical protein is 14.33% and the brand states an energy value of 404 kcal per 100g. It's described as suitable for tits, bramblings, finches, buntings, dunnocks, sparrows, linnets, nuthatches, siskins and yellowhammers, and as not containing cheap fillers such as whole oats.

On feeding it. Johnston & Jeff say it works well from a hanging feeder or scattered on a table, and that using both at once tends to bring in more species than either alone — worth setting up more than one feeding point if you want to see the full range of birds it's meant to attract.

Who it's for: anyone with a genuinely mixed garden visitor list — small finches through to bigger, ground-feeding species — who wants one bag that covers most of them rather than running separate specialist mixes.
