Cats choose warmth, height and cover — in that order
A cat’s thermoneutral zone sits several degrees above ours, which is why they find the radiator, the airing cupboard and the sunny patch on the carpet long before they find the bed you bought them. Warmth is the first thing to get right: a bed placed in a draught or on a cold tiled floor will be ignored no matter how plush it is, while the same bed moved next to a heat source is suddenly the favourite spot in the house.
Height and cover come next, and which matters more depends on the cat. Confident cats tend to want a vantage point — somewhere raised, with sightlines over the room and the door. Nervous cats want the opposite: something enclosed, low and out of the traffic, where they can watch without being watched. A household with both kinds of cat needs both kinds of bed, which is usually cheaper than buying the wrong one twice.
Washability is the thing people regret not checking
Cat beds collect fur, dander and the occasional hairball, and the ones that last are the ones you can actually clean. A removable, machine-washable cover is worth more than an extra centimetre of padding — a bed you have to sponge by hand gets cleaned less often, and a bed that smells is a bed a cat stops using.
Check the base too. A non-slip underside stops the bed skidding when a cat lands in it at speed, and a firm base holds shape far longer than loose stuffing. If you are buying an enclosed cave, look for one that unzips or folds flat, both for washing and so you can open it up when the weather turns warm.

Common questions
My cat ignores the bed I bought — what went wrong?
Usually the location rather than the bed. Cats choose warmth, then cover or height, then comfort. Move it next to a heat source, out of the draught and away from foot traffic, and add a blanket that already smells of them. Most beds that "don’t work" start working after they are moved.
What size cat bed should I get?
Watch how your cat sleeps. A cat that curls nose-to-tail wants a snug donut with raised sides — too big and it feels exposed. A cat that sprawls flat needs a bed longer than they are, or they will sleep half-on and half-off it.
Are radiator beds safe to leave on all winter?
Yes, provided the bracket fits your radiator properly and the stated weight limit covers your cat. Check the hooks occasionally, and if your radiator runs very hot, hang the bed on a lower or cooler one — the aim is gentle warmth, not direct heat.
Enclosed cave or open bed?
It depends on the cat, not the room. A cat that hides when the doorbell goes will use a cave; a cat that sleeps in the middle of the hallway will not. If you are unsure, an open bed in a warm, quiet corner is the safer first buy.
