If your cat sleeps under the duvet, inside the airing cupboard or behind the sofa cushions, they are telling you something specific: they want walls and a roof, not a soft circle in the middle of the room. Cats sleep more deeply in enclosed spaces because their sense of safety is about what can approach them from behind, and an open bed leaves that question unanswered every time they settle.

This is a sleeping bag rather than a bed, which means the cat pushes in under a covered top and sleeps surrounded rather than exposed. The filling is PP cotton, a springy polyester wadding that holds loft under a cat's weight and comes back after washing instead of matting into a flat pancake, and the lining is flannel, which warms to body temperature quickly. That combination is why a bag like this often gets used from the first day when an open bed sits ignored for a month.

• 50 x 40cm on the pink and blue designs

On size and on the name. At 50 x 40cm this holds one average adult cat, a kitten, or a very small dog. Two cats will not share it comfortably, and if you have two, the rule that saves arguments is one bed each plus a spare, in the same way as litter trays. It is also a sleeping bag rather than the round donut bed the name suggests; a cat who drapes over a rim rather than burrowing wants a different shape entirely.

Who it's for: burrowers, nervous or newly rehomed cats who need somewhere to retreat, older cats who feel the cold, and kittens in their first winter.
