Treating a pet for fleas without also treating the home only solves half the problem, because the vast majority of a flea infestation — eggs, larvae and pupae — lives in carpets, bedding and soft furnishings rather than on the animal itself at any given moment. This aisle covers that other half.
Why the house needs treating too
At any one time, adult fleas on a pet are a small fraction of the total flea population in a home — most of the life cycle happens off the animal, in carpet fibres, skirting boards and pet bedding. Treating only the pet leaves that hidden population to keep hatching and reinfesting.
A household flea spray, used alongside vacuuming and washing pet bedding on a hot wash, breaks that cycle at the environmental stage rather than only at the animal. Timing matters — some products need to be used again a few weeks later to catch fleas that hatch after the first treatment.
Mice, rats and other household pests
Humane and standard traps both have their place depending on what you're dealing with and how you'd rather handle it, and using bait boxes rather than loose bait keeps curious pets away from anything they shouldn't get into.
If you have pets in the home, check any pest control product is specifically described as pet-safe once set, or positioned somewhere pets genuinely can't reach, rather than assuming a product sold in a pet shop is automatically fine to leave anywhere.
A sensible routine, not a one-off spray
A single treatment, whether on the pet or in the home, rarely ends a flea problem outright — the life cycle takes weeks to fully clear, and reinfestation from outdoors is always a risk. Regular pet treatment alongside occasional household treatment, rather than reacting only once fleas are visibly a problem, works better long-term.
If an infestation is severe or isn't clearing with home treatment after a reasonable effort, a professional pest control service is sometimes the more practical option than repeated DIY attempts.
