Pet-proofing usually means one of two things — keeping a pet out of somewhere they shouldn't be, like a staircase or a room with something breakable, or protecting furniture and floors from claws, muddy paws and general wear. Both matter more with a new puppy, kitten or a recent house move than with a settled, older pet.
Gates and barriers
A pressure-fit gate is the simplest option for a doorway or the bottom of a staircase, needing no drilling and easy to move between rooms as needed. A wider gate, sized to the actual gap, sits more securely than forcing a narrower one to stretch further than it's designed for.
Puppies and kittens explore constantly in the first few months, so a gate at the top or bottom of stairs, or across a room with trailing wires or small objects, is often worth having temporarily even if it isn't needed long-term once your pet is older and calmer.
Protecting furniture
A scratch-resistant cover on a sofa or chair protects the upholstery underneath from claws, and is a lot easier to wash or replace than the furniture itself. It's a particularly practical option while a cat is still learning to use a scratching post, or a dog is still a determined chewer as a puppy.
Washable covers and throws work well on anything a muddy dog jumps up on regularly, saving a proper clean of the furniture itself for less often than daily.
The pest control side
Fly papers, mouse traps and similar products sit in this aisle too, since a home with pets often needs pest control that's mindful of curious noses and paws rather than a standard household approach. Covered traps and out-of-reach placement matter more here than in a pet-free home.
