This is the black finish of the extra-wide gate, and the colour is worth a moment's thought rather than being an afterthought. White gates announce themselves in a hallway; black tends to read as ironmongery and disappears against dark frames, skirting and wood floors — the same reason radiator valves and door furniture are rarely white.

Mechanically it is identical to its white sibling. It spans 75 to 85cm, which covers the wide openings that defeat standard gates, and pressure-mounts without drilling. A lock block at the base stiffens the frame where pressure-fit gates are usually least convincing. The door swings both ways and releases with one hand — press the button, lift, walk through — and leaves a 54cm gap, enough to carry a basket through without turning sideways.

Screw-fix it on stairs. A pressure gate is fine across a doorway. At the top of a staircase it should be mechanically fixed, not held by tension — that is true of every pressure gate on the market, and it is the one place the distinction matters.
