The auto-close is the feature that earns its keep. Any gate left open between 30 and 90 degrees swings shut and latches by itself — which matters because the way gates fail is never the mechanism, it is a person walking through with an armful of shopping and not turning round.

The frame is metal, lead-free, and adjusts from 74 to 80cm on its own or up to 87cm with the supplied extension, so it covers most standard door openings and a good number of odd ones. The handle slides and lifts for one-handed opening. Two rotating locks at the base set whether the door swings both ways or is restricted to one direction only — worth setting to single-direction at the top of stairs, so it cannot open out over the drop.

• Fits openings 74–80cm, or 80–87cm with the 7cm extension
• 78cm tall with 5cm bar spacing
• Auto-closing door between 30 and 90 degrees
• Double locking mechanism; slide-and-lift handle
• Two-way or single-direction swing, set at the base
• 46cm door opening; tapes and screws included

Fitting it at the top of stairs. Pressure-fit gates are fine across a doorway on the flat. At the top of a staircase, use the supplied screws and expansion fixings rather than relying on tension alone — PawHut say so and they are right. A pressure gate that shifts on a landing is worse than no gate.

Who it's for: Households keeping dogs out of a kitchen or off the stairs, and anyone whose current gate stays open because it needs two hands to shut.
