The point of a pet door is not really the flap, it is the lock. Four-way control means you can leave it open in the morning, set it to in-only at dusk so your cat can come home but not go out again, switch to out-only while you clean, and lock it fully overnight. Most of the value in one of these is being able to change your mind at six in the evening without getting up.

The flap is weatherproofed with brush seals around the frame, and those do the unglamorous work: they close the gap that would otherwise whistle through the kitchen in a January wind, and they wipe the worst of the wet off a cat on the way in. The aperture is a large one, intended for bigger cats and small to medium dogs, and the kit is designed for straightforward fitting into a door or a wall with the fixings supplied.

• Four-way lock: open, locked, in-only, out-only
• Large aperture for big cats and small to medium dogs
• Brush seals to cut draughts and heat loss
• Weatherproof flap
• Fixings included for door or wall fitting

Measure first, and check what your door is made of. Measure your pet's shoulder width and belly height rather than their weight. Double glazing and uPVC need a glazier or a fitter, not a jigsaw and an optimistic afternoon.

Who it's for: Households with a larger cat or a small dog who want real control over when the door works, and who are willing to measure before they buy.
