By the time a flea is visible on the dog, the overwhelming bulk of the problem is not on the dog at all — it is in the carpet pile, down the back of the sofa and in the gap under the skirting board, in stages that do not look like fleas yet. That is why treating the animal alone so often feels like it worked for a fortnight and then stopped.

Strikeback's answer is three actives doing two different jobs. Cypermethrin at 0.1% w/w and chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium extract at 0.05% w/w are the insecticides: they flush fleas out of the places they are hiding and kill them. Pyriproxyfen at 0.01% w/w is an insect growth regulator, aimed not at the fleas you have but at the ones that would have hatched next. It comes as 1 litre, is described as low odour, and is listed for indoor soft furnishings including mattresses and carpets, for hard non-porous surfaces, and for both professional and amateur use.
