Cats want two things from a sleeping spot, height and warmth, and a radiator supplies both in the one place they cannot usually get to. Hooking a bed over the top of a panel puts the cat at eye level and out of the way of the dog, the toddler and the front door, on a surface that warms up every time the heating comes on and holds it for an hour afterwards.

A folding metal frame carries the weight and the fleece cover lifts off it for the machine, which is the only sensible way to deal with a bed a cat sleeps in every night from October to March. The raised rim is worth more than it looks: cats curl tighter and sleep more deeply pressed against a lip, and the soft fleece takes pressure off the joints of older cats, who are usually the ones feeling the cold in the first place. The frame folds flat for the summer.

• Overall 45 x 39 x 25cm
• Folding metal frame with machine washable fleece cover
• Raised rim suits a curled sleeping position
• Hooks fit most radiators around 4cm wide
• Maximum weight 5kg
• Grey; frame folds flat for storage
• Recommended for small breeds

Check two measurements before you order. The bed is rated to 5kg, which rules out a well-built male, a Maine Coon or an overweight moggy; heavier cats want a floor bed rather than something hanging off a bracket. And the hooks are made for radiators of about 4cm, so measure the thickness of your panel at the top, because a wide double panel will not take them. Hang it where the cat can step across from a windowsill or a chair rather than somewhere they have to jump blind.

Who it's for: slim adult cats and kittens in cold houses, cats who have already claimed the airing cupboard, and homes where every warm spot is occupied by a dog.
