A cat who has just woken up stretches, scratches, then settles again, and almost always inside a metre of where they were sleeping. Putting the scratching surface and the bed into one object works with that sequence rather than against it: the woven rim is the part they dig into on the way up, and the dish in the middle is where they curl back down afterwards.

It is woven linen, made up as an oval basin with a raised edge, in two footprints. The reinforced versions carry a heavier weave through the rim, which is exactly where the wear happens, and one option adds raised ears on the edge for lifting the whole thing out to shake. Linen holds up better than loose rope against a cat who digs rather than rakes, and unlike cardboard it does not leave a trail of shed fibres across the floor every morning.

On the name: this is listed as a scratching post and it is nothing of the sort. It is a low oval scratcher bed, and cats who scratch upright, hauling down a door frame or the side of the sofa, will not transfer to it; those cats need a vertical post and we would rather tell you now. It suits the cats who scratch and knead flat. On size, a full-grown cat hangs over the edges of the 41 x 31cm, so take the 60 x 40cm unless you are buying for a kitten.

Who it's for: flat scratchers, cats who like a shallow rim to lean against, and small living rooms where one object needs to do two jobs.
