Most pet beds are wrong for half the year. Too warm in July, not warm enough in January, so households end up owning two of them and having nowhere to put the spare. This mat is reversible instead: fleece side up through the winter, ice silk side up through the summer, and the same single mat does both jobs out of one cupboard rather than two.

The build is more considered than it first looks. Under the soft fleece cover sits a layer of aluminium foil, which reflects the animal's own body heat back upwards rather than generating any of its own, and it dampens noise coming up off a hard floor as well. Below that is quilted cotton filling for cushioning, and the reverse face is ice silk, a smooth fabric that draws heat away on contact.

On the warming side. Self-heating means reflected body heat, not a heat source. There is no element and nothing to plug in, so it takes a pet lying on it to warm up and it will not heat a cold room. That is perfectly fine for a healthy cat or dog, and not enough on its own for a very young, very old or unwell animal in an unheated space.
