Anxious pets don't calm down because a bed is soft; they calm down because it's enclosed and it smells like them. That's the actual job of a cave-shaped bed, and it's a different job from the flat cushions most cheap beds are.

This one is a sherpa fleece cave around a soft, supportive inner cushion, filled with recycled fibre, sized at 45 x 40cm — built to hold a cat's own scent inside the fleece rather than air it out the way an open bed does.

• Measures 45 x 40cm
• Sherpa fleece outer
• Soft, supportive inner cushion
• Filled with recycled fibre
• Machine washable at 30C, do not tumble dry

On the fit. 45 x 40cm is roomy for most cats but tight for anything beyond a small dog, and the makers don't give an entrance measurement — so if you're buying for a nervous larger animal, there's no figure here to check the doorway against.

Who it's for: owners of an anxious or comfort-seeking cat, or a small dog, whose current bed is an open pad that gets ignored in favour of somewhere darker.
