Rosewood Recycled Wild Bird Seed Feeder

Put a feeder up in a garden and within a week you are not feeding songbirds. You are feeding whatever is heaviest and pushiest in the postcode, while the small birds you bought it for wait their turn in the hedge and mostly do not get one.

Rosewood have gone at that from two directions. The feeding port is deliberately sized to be less acceptable to bigger, greedier birds, pigeons included, which leaves the smaller ones somewhere to eat in peace. And the whole thing does not hang: it has a one-piece mounting bracket and lid with a flexible multi-fixing system, so it goes onto a wall, a post, a tree or even a drainpipe. A velcro strap comes with it for round, square and rectangular posts, drainpipes and smaller tree trunks up to 11cm diameter, and there is a one-screw mounting option that lets the whole feeder come off its fixing for filling and cleaning. Capacity is 1.2 litres, it measures 19.5cm, and it is made from durable plastic with 50% of the material coming from recycled sources. The design is meant to keep seed drier and stop it being scattered, so the ground underneath stays cleaner.

It does not hang, and that is a decision rather than a detail. If your garden's bird feeding happens on a pole or a shepherd's crook with hooks on it, this is the wrong feeder — it needs something solid to attach to, and the supplied strap only reaches round trunks up to 11cm diameter, which is a young tree rather than an established one. Rosewood do not tell us the port dimensions, which seed sizes it suits, or how to clean it, so the one-screw removal option is your practical route to washing it out. And less acceptable to larger birds is their wording, not a promise: a determined pigeon remains a determined pigeon.

Who it's for: gardens with a wall, a fence post or a drainpipe and nowhere obvious to hang anything, and anyone whose current feeder empties in two days into birds they did not invite.
