Winter is the season a garden bird most needs a quick, calorie-dense food, since natural insect and seed supplies are thinnest exactly when the days are shortest and the cold is hardest on a small body's energy reserves.

Henry Bell's Fat Balls are made from wheat, beef tallow, calcium carbonate, black sunflowers and red dari, sold as a tub of 50, weighing 4.33kg in total. They're designed for use in wire fat ball feeders rather than being scattered loose.

The bit that's missing. No individual ball weight, calorie figure or protein/fat percentage is given, so we can't tell you exactly how energy-dense each ball is beyond the ingredient list itself.

Who it's for: anyone feeding garden birds through the colder months who wants a bulk tub rather than buying fat balls a handful at a time.
