A feeder that gets picked over and left half-full of husks is doing half its job — birds flicking out the seeds they don't want, leaving the rest to rot on the ground and attract exactly the pests a garden feeder is supposed to avoid.

This is a nine-seed, wheat-free mix: cut maize, naked oats, yellow millet, red millet, red dari, sunflower hearts, white dari, safflower seed and Nyjer seed. It's marketed as "no mess" on the strength of that seed selection rather than any dehusking process — the theory being that a wider spread of seed types a bird actually wants leaves less rejected on the ground. Berry Feeds took this formulation over from Marriage's Premium Wheat Free Mix, so the recipe has a history under a different name.

• Nine seeds: cut maize, naked oats, yellow millet, red millet, red dari, sunflower hearts, white dari, safflower seed, Nyjer seed
• Wheat free
• Formulated for year-round feeding
• Previously sold as Marriage's Premium Wheat Free Mix
• 20KG sack

On "no mess." Berry Feeds don't publish a specific waste or mess reduction figure, so "no mess" here is the manufacturer's own description of the mix rather than a measured claim. Whether it holds up in your own garden will still depend on which species you attract and how many are competing for the feeder.

Who it's for: owners feeding a range of garden birds year-round who want a wheat-free mix with a wide seed variety, rather than a single-grain or budget filler blend.
