Sunflower seed shells piling up under a feeder are one of the more annoying parts of feeding garden birds, especially on a patio or near a doorway, and dehusking the seed before it is sold is the direct fix for that rather than any change in bird behaviour. Marriage's sunflower hearts have already had the shell removed.
