Garden birds burn through energy fast in cold weather, which is why a feeder stocked with something genuinely calorie-dense matters more in winter than the variety of seed on offer — quantity of energy, not choice, is what gets a bird through a cold night.

Peckish's Extra Goodness Balls are built around peanuts and sunflower seeds, both of which the maker highlights as high in protein and fat, sold as a 4.4kg tub with no additional fillers. It's a complementary treat rather than a complete food, meant to supplement rather than replace other feeding.

• 4.4kg tub
• Peanuts and sunflower seeds
• No additional fillers
• High in protein and fat, for extra energy
• Complementary treat, not a complete diet

One thing to flag. No exact protein or fat percentage is given, and no ball count or individual weight either, so we can't tell you precisely how many balls are in the tub or how energy-dense each one is beyond the maker's own description.

Who it's for: anyone feeding garden birds through the colder months who wants a bulk tub of energy-dense suet balls rather than buying a handful at a time.
