A hungry garden bird in cold weather is burning through energy faster than it can easily replace, which is the entire reason winter feeding tends to shift toward fat and protein rather than seed alone.

These are suet fat balls, packed with peanuts and sunflower seeds, and Peckish describe them as their highest-energy suet ball in the range — more protein and more fat than their other branded energy balls. They're made without added wheat as a bulking filler and without calcium carbonate, which Peckish say makes them their best energy balls for that reason. A peanut aroma is added, which the manufacturer notes birds can pick up even with a limited sense of smell.

• Packed with peanuts and sunflower seeds
• No added wheat filler
• No calcium carbonate filler
• Added peanut aroma to attract birds
• Sold in a tub of 50 balls

What's not on the card. No protein, fat or energy percentage has been supplied for these fat balls — only the ingredients and the manufacturer's claim of higher nutritional content than their other suet balls. If you want to compare it numerically against a different brand, this card doesn't give you the figures to do it.

Who it's for: anyone feeding garden birds through colder months who wants a higher-energy suet product without wheat or calcium carbonate bulking it out.
