A garden bird spends a cold night burning what it managed to eat in daylight, which is why the feeders that matter most in a British winter are the fatty ones rather than the pretty ones. Seed mixes are what most people put out; fat is what gets a small bird through to morning.

This is a pressed block rather than a ball or a cake. The composition is cereals, oils and fats including ruminant tallow, seeds and ground peanuts, and Honeyfield's declare crude protein at 8.7% with gross energy at 500 kcal per 100g. Preservatives and a fruity flavouring are listed in the additives, the flavouring at 600mg/kg. They pitch it for the colder months and for the breeding season, when adults are feeding young as well as themselves.

• 280g block
• Crude protein 8.7%
• Gross energy 500 kcal per 100g
• Cereals, oils and fats including ruminant tallow, seeds and ground peanuts
• Fruity flavouring declared at 600mg/kg, plus preservatives
• Sold as a single block

The fruit is a flavouring, not fruit. There is no fruit in the composition at all — it is cereals, fats, seeds and ground peanuts — and the fruity part appears in the additives as a flavouring at 600mg/kg. That is not a criticism of the block, which is a fat-and-seed block and performs like one, but it is worth knowing if you were buying it for berries. Two other things: it contains ground peanuts, so keep it away from anyone in the house with a nut allergy, and no block dimensions have been supplied, so check it against the suet feeder you already own.

Who it's for: anyone running a suet block feeder through the winter and on into spring, who wants something energy-dense in it rather than another bag of mixed seed.
