On the word "deter"
Supa are careful to say the cage deters squirrels rather than defeats them, and their own hints sheet assumes yours will keep trying — they suggest keeping the feeder out of jumping range of trees and adding a tree hook to increase the drop. No mesh gauge or aperture size is published anywhere on this, and that is the measurement that would actually tell you whether a determined grey squirrel gets a paw through.
Why we chose it
A caged feeder costs more than a plain tube and it is still the cheaper option, because you stop buying the same bag of peanuts twice a week. The steel frame is the part that decides it for me over the wire-and-plastic ones at this price.

Full description
A whole peanut is a choking risk to a fledgling, which is the real reason peanuts belong behind mesh rather than loose on a table. The cage that keeps squirrels out does the same job at the other end of the scale: birds can only take a small piece of the nut at a time.
Supa build this one on a powder-coated steel frame with an outer cage around the peanut tube, so a squirrel or a larger bird cannot reach past it. It fills through a flip-top lid rather than by dismantling anything, and the outer cage gives smaller birds somewhere enclosed to feed. Approximate dimensions are 26cm high by 17cm wide by 17cm deep, plus the handle.
- Powder-coated steel frame with an outer cage
- 26cm (H) x 17cm (W) x 17cm (D), plus handle
- Flip-top lid for filling
- Intended to deter squirrels and larger birds such as pigeons and doves
- Supa list blue tits, chaffinches, greenfinches, goldfinches, woodpeckers and house sparrows among the birds that take peanuts

Who it's for: anyone whose peanut feeder is being emptied by squirrels or wood pigeons rather than by small birds, and gardens where fledglings are about in spring.

Common questions
How big is it?
Approximately 26cm high, 17cm wide and 17cm deep, plus the handle on top.
What is it made of?
A powder-coated steel frame. Supa do not publish the mesh gauge or the spacing.
Should I use whole peanuts or split ones?
Whole. Supa recommend feeding whole peanuts from a feeder like this, because it means birds can only take a small piece at a time rather than swallowing a nut whole.
How do I fill it?
Through a flip-top lid, so it does not need taking apart.
How should I clean it?
Supa's advice is warm water with a mild detergent or a disinfectant solution, rinsed thoroughly with fresh water and left to air dry.
What size is it?
17cm x 17cm x 26cm. Every measurement we hold for this product is in the specifications above.
