Suet pellets left exposed to rain turn to mush fast, which defeats the point of a high-energy winter feed - so keeping the reserve dry while still letting birds get at what they need is the actual design problem here.

This feeder is built with a wire mesh section that birds feed from, while a larger plastic reservoir behind it keeps the remaining suet pellets dry until they're needed. Supa say the base also stops debris falling to the floor, which discourages vermin and lets the feeder double as a supplementary feeding station.
