A bowl is the most basic piece of kit any pet owner buys, but the shape, material and size all genuinely affect how well it works for a particular dog or cat — a bowl that's fine for one animal can cause real problems for another, from bolted food to a sore, flattened nose against the rim.
Material and shape
Stainless steel is the easiest bowl to keep properly clean, doesn't hold odours the way plastic can, and is durable enough for a determined chewer. Ceramic is heavier and harder to tip over, which suits a boisterous eater, but it can chip, and a chipped glaze is harder to keep hygienic.
Shallow, wide dishes suit flat-faced breeds and cats whose whiskers are sensitive to touching the sides of a deep bowl, a genuine discomfort known as whisker fatigue. A raised bowl can help a large or older dog eat without stooping as far, though it's worth checking with your vet if joint or swallowing issues are a factor.
Slow feeders, for dogs who eat too fast
A dog who bolts food is at higher risk of choking, vomiting shortly after eating, and in more serious cases a dangerous condition where the stomach twists — a slow feeder, with ridges or a maze pattern built into the bowl, forces a dog to eat around the obstacles rather than in one go.
It takes most dogs a little time to adjust to a slow feeder, and a small number find it frustrating at first rather than simply slower. Persisting for a few meals usually settles this, and the benefit for a genuine fast eater is worth the adjustment period.
Automatic feeders
An automatic feeder dispenses a set portion at set times, which suits a household with an irregular schedule, or a cat that grazes through the day rather than eating two set meals. It doesn't replace checking in on a pet, but it does take the pressure off being home for an exact feeding time.
Portion accuracy and ease of cleaning are the two things worth checking before buying — a feeder that's fiddly to refill or hard to wash properly becomes a chore fast, however convenient the automatic dispensing itself is.
About bowls & feeders
Stainless steel is the sensible default: it does not scratch the way plastic does, and those scratches are where bacteria sit. It also cannot be chewed apart. Ceramic is heavier and stays put, but check any glaze is food-safe and replace a bowl that chips.
For cats, wide and shallow. A deep narrow bowl presses on the whiskers while they eat, which many cats dislike enough to leave food or paw it out onto the floor — usually read as fussiness. A raised bowl can make eating easier for a tall or arthritic dog, though it is not the bloat prevention it is sometimes sold as; the evidence there points the other way for large breeds, so ask your vet if that is your reason for buying one.
Water bowls want to be bigger than you think and washed as often as your own glass. Refilling without washing leaves a film that puts fussy drinkers off.

Common questions
What bowl material is best?
Stainless steel and ceramic are durable, easy to clean and hygienic; if you use plastic, replace it if it scratches, as worn surfaces can harbour bacteria.
What does a slow feeder do?
A slow feeder uses ridges or a maze to make your pet eat more slowly, which can aid digestion and reduce gulping for fast eaters.
How often should I clean food bowls?
Wash food bowls after meals and refresh water bowls daily, as leftover food and biofilm can build up bacteria quickly.
