A dog that bolts its dinner is not being greedy about the next meal, it is being efficient about this one, and the standard response is to make the bowl harder to get into. SloDog's argument is that this is the wrong idea from the start: a maze bowl makes the dog work its dinner loose from behind obstructions, and having to fight for food it can already see is frustrating rather than calming.

So instead of a bowl this is a plate. The larger flat surface puts all the food in plain sight, and it is divided into lots of small shallow pockets so the meal arrives as a series of tiny ones. The dog takes a pocket at a time; go for two at once and the food drops straight back out of the dog's mouth, which is what sets the pace. It measures 35 x 26 cm, or 14" x 10", is made from non-toxic food grade PP, and is dishwasher and freezer safe. SloDog put it forward particularly for flat-nosed breeds such as French bulldogs, and say it suits dry, wet and raw feeding alike.

Two cups is the ceiling, and it is a real one. SloDog cap it at 2 cups or 500ml. That is one meal for a lot of dogs and nothing like enough for a big dog fed once a day, so measure your portion against it before ordering rather than after. A plate is also open on every side, so anything a dog can nudge off the edge goes on the floor, and no non-slip base is mentioned anywhere in what has been supplied. And it changes the speed of eating, not the reason for it: a dog that guards its bowl or gets frantic at mealtimes has a problem the crockery will not solve.

Who it's for: flat-faced dogs who cannot get into a deep maze bowl properly in the first place, gulpers of any shape, and owners whose dog gave up on a maze feeder or got cross with it.
