The trouble with a bowl is that it gives up everything at once. A dog or cat who eats too fast swallows air with the food, and the discomfort that follows is the reason so many owners end up buying something with ridges in it. This takes a different approach: the food sits inside a drum above a maze tray, and your pet has to nudge the drum round to make a few pieces fall out at a time, so the pace is set by their nose rather than by how quickly they can swallow.

The drum sits on a base that adjusts for height, which is the detail that makes it work across a mixed household. A raised feeding position suits a taller or older dog who otherwise eats with their neck craned down, while the lower setting is right for a cat or a small breed. Underneath, the maze plate catches what falls and slows things a second time, so the dispensed food still has to be worked out of the ridges rather than hoovered up in one pass.

• 40cm base length
• 30cm drum width
• Height adjusts between 23.5cm and 31.5cm
• Rotating drum dispenses food a little at a time
• Ridged maze tray beneath catches and slows what drops
• Comes apart for cleaning and refilling
• Suits cats and dogs

On what you can put in it. Dry kibble and hard treats only. Wet or raw food will not roll, it will pack into the drum and go off in it. And while slowing a gulper does reduce the air they swallow, a deep-chested dog with a history of bloat needs veterinary advice, not just a different bowl.

Who it's for: Households feeding dry food to a pet who eats too fast and is bored between meals.
