Watch a cat eat from a flat dish on the floor and you will see two things happen: the neck bends right down, and the whiskers press against the rim on both sides. Raising the bowl on a pedestal and tilting the rim towards the cat deals with both at once, bringing the food up and forward so nothing has to crane down and nothing brushes against the sides.

It is ceramic, and that does the unglamorous work here. Ceramic is heavy enough that a determined cat cannot shove it across the kitchen floor, it does not scratch the way plastic does, and so it holds nothing in those scratches. Plastic bowls are a common suspect in feline chin acne for exactly that reason. The glaze wipes clean in seconds. The mushroom shape is decoration, but the pedestal foot is what creates the height.

On capacity. At around 200ml this is a food bowl, not a water bowl for a household that fills up once a day and leaves it. If you want it for water, expect to top it up. The height suits adult cats, and a small kitten may find the rim high at first, which we would rather tell you now than have you find out.
