A dog who empties a bowl in fifteen seconds swallows a good deal of air along with it, and gulped meals sit behind a lot of the burping, retching and post-dinner discomfort that owners put down to the food itself. Slowing the pace fixes more than it sounds like it should. This bowl does the job twice over, with a maze tray to eat around and a spinner in the middle that has to be nudged before it gives anything up.

The centre is a flower-shaped turntable that rotates when your dog pushes it with a nose or a paw, releasing kibble a little at a time into the petal maze surrounding it. That turns dinner into a short puzzle rather than a race, and the puzzle element is what holds the attention of dogs who quickly learn to hoover a plain maze bowl. It is moulded in food-safe PP, 24 cm across and 8.5 cm tall.

• Rotating flower spinner set into a surrounding maze tray
• 24 cm diameter, 8.5 cm high
• Moulded in food-safe PP
• Choice of blue or green
• Smooth surfaces with no fabric to trap food; wipes clean

On what it suits. The spinner needs dry kibble to work. Wet or raw food clogs the mechanism and simply sits there, so use a plain lick mat for those instead. It is also a puzzle, and a determined dog will sooner or later try flipping a light plastic bowl rather than solving it, so feed it on a mat or in a corner rather than out in the middle of the floor.

Who it's for: Owners of a fast-eating, easily bored dog fed on dry food, who would like mealtimes to take minutes rather than seconds.
