Hens will stand on anything, and whatever they stand on ends up in the water. That is the real reason a poultry drinker has a domed lid rather than a flat one — not styling, but keeping droppings out of the only water the flock has.

This one is gravity fed: you turn it over, twist the base off anti-clockwise, fill the body, twist the base back on until body and base lock together, and turn it back the right way up. It holds 6 litres, it can sit on the ground or hang, and there is a dosage scale moulded in so anything added to the water can be measured rather than guessed. The handle is shaped for carrying it full. Made in the UK, and it measures 26.5cm wide by 26.5cm deep by 34.0cm high.
