Cats and short-nosed dogs eat with their necks craned down and their throats compressed, and older animals with stiff shoulders feel it most. Tilting the bowls towards the animal and lifting them off the floor takes that bend out of the posture, so food arrives at an angle they can reach without hunching. It is a small change that usually shows up first in a cat who stops walking away from a half-finished bowl.

Both dishes are ceramic, which is worth the extra weight over plastic. Ceramic does not scratch the way plastic does, and those fine scratches are where bacteria sit and where feline chin acne generally starts. The dishes lift out of the frame, so washing them is a proper wash rather than a wipe around a fixed moulding. Anti-slip strips on the base stop the whole stand travelling across a tiled kitchen while a dog pushes into it.

• Two removable ceramic dishes, one for food and one for water
• Angled, raised stand for a more natural eating posture
• Anti-slip strips under the base
• Dishes lift out for washing
• Four finishes: cherry blossom, retro green, roland purple, light beige
• Sized for cats and small dogs

On height, and on water. Worth knowing too that many cats prefer their water well away from their food and will drink more from a separate bowl across the room, so the second dish may end up holding something else.

Who it's for: Cats and small dogs, particularly older ones or flat-faced breeds who struggle to eat comfortably from floor level.
