Blue, grey and white is a combination that disappears into a kitchen rather than announcing itself, and there is a good deal to be said for that in something you look at every day and never put away. The Pawsitano borrows its palette from Mediterranean ceramics without the weight, the price, or the risk of a broken dish across a tiled floor. It is quiet, well made and easy to live with.

Melamine is what makes the lightness possible: 90 g in the hand, but rigid enough that the saucer does not flex when it is lifted full, and hard enough that a fork or a set of claws leaves nothing behind. It is BPA-free and food safe, the base is non-slip, and it washes in the dishwasher without fading. The 13.2 cm face is the right size for a cat's meal, a small dog's portion, or a little water in a crate.

On travel. The lightness makes this the obvious dish to put in a bag for a weekend away or to leave at a relative's house, and a familiar bowl helps a fussy eater settle somewhere new. Two limits, though. It is not microwave safe, and at 90 g it will not stay put in the boot of a car or on a windy patio unless there is something in it.
