Cat Trees & Scratchers →

Scratching is a normal cat behaviour, not a habit to train out — it stretches muscles, sheds the outer claw sheath, and marks territory with scent glands in the paws. A scratching post or cat tree gives a cat somewhere to do all of that, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason a cat ignores it in favour of the sofa.

What makes a scratching post worth using

Height and stability matter more than most owners expect — a post needs to be tall enough for a cat to stretch fully upright, and sturdy enough not to wobble or tip when they put their full weight into a scratch. A post that rocks will get abandoned fast, however nice it looks.

The surface matters too. Sisal rope is the most common material for a reason — cats generally take to the rough, grippy texture more readily than carpet-covered posts, which can also confuse a cat into thinking any carpet, including the living room floor, is fair game.

Cat trees — more than just a taller post

A cat tree adds platforms, hideaways and often a dangling toy or two to the basic scratching post, giving a cat somewhere to climb, perch up high, and retreat out of sight — all things cats seek out naturally, particularly in a busy household or one with other pets.

Position matters as much as the tree itself. A tree tucked in a quiet corner rarely gets used the way one placed near a window, or in a room the household actually spends time in, does — cats want a vantage point on what's going on, not somewhere to be forgotten.

Common questions

How do I stop my cat scratching the sofa instead of a post?

Place a scratching post right next to the sofa or spot they currently favour, rather than tucked away elsewhere, and consider making the sofa temporarily less appealing with a throw or cover while the post takes over. Punishing a cat for scratching furniture rarely works and can just make them wary of you.

What's the best material for a scratching post?

Sisal rope is the most widely used and generally the most successful, since most cats take to its rough, grippy texture readily. Carpet-covered posts can work too, but risk teaching a cat that carpet in general is an acceptable scratching surface.

Do I need a cat tree if I already have a scratching post?

Not necessarily — a tree adds height, hiding spots and perching platforms on top of the scratching function, which some cats value a lot more than others. A single busy household cat, or a nervous one, often benefits most from the extra vertical space and places to retreat.

How tall should a scratching post be?

Tall enough for your cat to stretch to their full height with front paws extended, which is taller than most owners assume — a post that's too short won't let a cat get the full stretch they're after, and they'll look elsewhere for something that does.
