The cow-print plush is the first thing anyone notices, and it is a fair reason to buy. Pet furniture that people actually like looking at tends to end up in the living room rather than the spare bedroom, which is where the cat wanted to be anyway. Underneath the pattern sits a barrel-shaped two-tier body with cubby dens cut into it and sisal posts doing the structural work.

The barrel shape earns its keep. A round den holds a curled cat closely on all sides, which is the position they sleep in when they feel safe, and a curved wall gives a smaller cat something to brace against. Two tiers mean a low den for hiding and an upper one for watching the room, so a cat can change its mind about how sociable it feels without ever leaving the piece.

• 44cm wide, 44cm deep and 68cm high
• Two tiers with enclosed cubby dens
• Barrel-shaped body in cow-print plush
• Sisal-wrapped scratching posts
• Dangling flower toy
• One colourway and one size

On the word villa. The manufacturer's copy calls this a generous villa for multi-cat households. At 44cm square and 68cm high it is not. That is a single-cat piece, comfortably so, and a second cat would be queuing rather than sharing. Bought as a compact tower for one, it is good value. Bought as the answer for three cats, it will disappoint you inside a week.

Who it's for: One cat, in a room where the furniture has to look presentable, wanting somewhere to scratch, hide and sit up high in a single small unit.
