Cats that like cardboard really like it, and a single pad does not survive long with a keen scratcher. Buying replacements one at a time gets tiresome. This is the bulk answer: five pads in a box, with the box itself part of the scratcher.

The box is 42cm long, 26cm wide and 23cm tall, and each pad is 41 x 24.5cm and 2.5cm thick. Stack the pads in the box and the top one is a raised scratching bed, with the scraps falling down inside rather than onto the floor. Stand the box on its end against a wall with a pad on the floor in front, and it becomes an upright and a flat scratcher at once. Every pad can be turned over when the first side is worn.

• Five corrugated cardboard pads, each 41 x 24.5 x 2.5cm
• Box 42 x 26 x 23cm
• Each pad usable on both sides
• Scraps fall into the box
• Use flat as a bed or upright against a wall
• Supplied as five pads and one box

On what to expect: This is plain brown cardboard with cats printed on the box, and it looks like what it is. It is also for small and average cats as a bed, because the pads are about the size of a sheet of A3 paper. The maker notes measurements can be out by a centimetre or two.

Who it's for: Cats who destroy a cardboard scratcher in a fortnight, homes with more than one cat, and anyone who wants spares in the cupboard.
