A scratcher that never changes gets used for a fortnight and then quietly becomes furniture. The turntable is the answer to that. The top plate moves under the paw, so the same object behaves a little differently every time the cat commits to it, and a bored indoor cat has a reason to keep coming back to it rather than drifting off to the curtains instead.

There are nine builds and the naming takes a minute to decode. Basic style big flower is the standard base. Oval and mushroom describe the shape of the top plate. Heightened raises it. And density plate means the base is engineered board rather than solid wood. Solid wood is the heavier and more stable of the two, and the one to choose if your cat throws real weight into a scratch rather than just resting a paw on it.

• Solid wood or engineered density board base, depending on the option chosen
• Nine configurations: basic flower, oval, oval mushroom and heightened versions
• Rotating turntable top plate
• Supplied as one set
• Designed for indoor cats

Two things worth knowing. The density plate options are engineered board rather than solid timber. They are cheaper and perfectly serviceable indoors, but they swell if they get damp, so keep them out of conservatories and utility rooms. The manufacturer also gives no measurements for any of the nine builds. Tell us which one you are considering and we will measure it, rather than publish a figure we have not checked ourselves.

Who it's for: Indoor cats with more energy than floor space, households that already own a plain post and need something with movement in it, and rooms where a carpeted tower would look wrong.
