Cats scratch to mark territory and to strip the outer sheath off their claws, and they will do it on a doorframe or a sofa arm just as readily as on something bought for the purpose — the trick is giving them a texture they prefer before they choose one you don't.

This is Rosewood's Battersea Fish Shaped Scratcher: a durable carpet material shaped like a fish, fitted with a handle so it can either hang from a door knob or sit on the floor for a cat to lounge on as well as scratch. The carpet surface is the part doing the work, giving claws something to catch and strip against.

• Fish-shaped scratcher
• Durable carpet material surface
• Fitted handle for hanging on a door knob
• Can also be placed on the floor
• Doubles as a spot to lounge on, not just scratch

What we don't know. Rosewood do not give us a size, weight or a care instruction for this scratcher, so there is nothing here on how it holds up to a heavy or repeated scratcher over time, or how to clean it once it picks up fur and dust.

Who it's for: cat owners who want a low-cost, low-footprint scratcher that can be hung out of the way on a door rather than taking up floor space permanently.
