A cat tree earns its space by giving a cat somewhere to be that the rest of the household cannot reach. Height is the point. From a high perch a cat can watch the room, sleep without being disturbed, and get away from a dog, a toddler or another cat without a confrontation, and the scratching posts on the way up mean the redirection of claws happens where the cat already spends time.

Two sizes are offered, and they are genuinely different pieces of furniture rather than the same thing scaled. The smaller stands 86cm on a 40 x 60cm footprint, which is a corner piece for a kitten or an older cat who no longer jumps. The taller is 135cm on 61 x 49cm, tall enough to put an adult cat above eye level. Both carry sisal-wrapped posts, an enclosed condo, open perches and a dangling toy, under a lion-dance styled hideaway at the top.

• Two sizes: 40 x 60 x 86cm and 61 x 49 x 135cm
• Sisal-wrapped scratching posts
• Enclosed condo for sleeping out of sight
• Raised perches for watching the room
• Dangling toy for play at the base
• Lion-dance styled hideaway on top

On height and stability. The base weight is not published, and any tree over a metre gets pushed about when a cat launches off the top. Stand it against a wall, and strap it if your cat is large or enthusiastic. Note too that the 86cm model gives an adult cat very little advantage over the back of a sofa.

What the options mean. Sold in sizes from 60X86cm to 49X135cm — £184.99 to £269.99.

Who it's for: Indoor cats without a high place of their own, in homes where the sofa arm has started to take the punishment instead.
