Reptile keeping is unusual in pet care because the animal can't regulate its own body temperature — everything from heating and lighting to the food itself is there to do a job the reptile can't do on its own, rather than being a comfort extra the way a dog bed is for a dog.

Heat and light aren't optional extras

A basking spot bulb and the right background heat let a reptile move between warmer and cooler areas of the vivarium to regulate itself, the way it would move between sun and shade in the wild. Get the setup wrong and the animal has no way to compensate on its own.

Many reptiles also need UVB lighting to process calcium properly, not just visible light to see by. This is one area where checking the correct requirement for your specific species — rather than assuming a generic reptile light covers it — genuinely matters.

Feeding by species, not by aisle

What a reptile eats varies hugely by species — a tortoise needs plant matter, a lizard may take live or dried insects and greens, and some snakes take whole prey items entirely differently from either. There's no single “reptile food” that suits the whole aisle, so buy for the animal you actually keep.

Calcium and vitamin supplementation is a genuine part of feeding many reptiles properly, dusted onto food rather than given loose, because captive diets rarely replicate the full range of what a wild diet would provide on its own.

Furnishing the vivarium

Branches, basking platforms and hides aren't decoration — they give a reptile somewhere to climb, bask at the right height near a heat source, and retreat out of sight when it wants to, which matters for a naturally cautious animal in an enclosed space.

A water dish suited to the species matters more than it looks — some reptiles drink from standing water, others prefer to lick droplets, and the dish itself sometimes needs to be shallow enough not to be a drowning risk for a smaller animal.
