On the swallowing claim

Komodo's wording is that it reduces the risk of impaction, not that it removes it, and that distinction is the one to hold on to — no loose substrate is safe to eat. There is also no species list beyond "tortoises and a wide range of snakes and lizards", no particle size and no recommended depth, so how deep to lay it and how often to change it are not answered anywhere on this. A substrate that breaks down when wet is also one that needs attention the day a water bowl goes over.

Why we chose it

Straw is the cheap answer to a problem people usually solve with expensive bark, and six litres fills a decent enclosure. Low dust is the part that decides it — dusty substrate is the reason keepers end up changing brand.

Full description

Impaction is the fear that decides substrate for most reptile keepers, and it is a reasonable one: the first question anyone asks about a loose bedding is what happens if the animal eats some of it while taking food off the floor.

Komodo answer that directly with this one. It is made from 100% natural straw, pressed into pellets, and it is designed to break down into fine particles when it gets wet — and to do the same thing if it is swallowed accidentally, which is what they say reduces the impaction risk. It is virtually dust free, it works in dry or humid setups, and the pellets are absorbent enough that soiled ones clump and lift out on their own, which keeps ammonia down between full changes.

  • 6 litre bag
  • Made from 100% natural straw
  • Virtually dust free
  • Eco-friendly, sustainable and biodegradable
  • Breaks down to fine particles when wet
  • Soiled pellets isolate and are easily removed
  • Suitable for dry or humid environments

Who it's for: tortoise keepers, and snake or lizard setups that need something soft, absorbent and low-dust for either an arid or a humid enclosure.

Common questions
What is it made of?

100% natural straw, formed into absorbent pellets.

Is it safe if my reptile swallows some?

Komodo say it breaks down to fine particles if accidentally swallowed, which they describe as reducing the risk of impaction. Reducing is not removing, and no loose substrate should be eaten deliberately.

Which animals is it for?

Komodo name tortoises and a wide range of snakes and lizards, and say it suits either arid or humid environments. No specific species list is published.

Is it dusty?

Komodo describe it as virtually dust free, which is unusual for a loose pellet substrate.

How deep should I lay it?

No depth guidance has been supplied to us. Judge it against the species you keep and their burrowing habits.
