Substrate is the flooring of a vivarium, and it does more work than it looks like it should — holding humidity at the right level, letting a digging species express natural behaviour, and making day-to-day cleaning manageable or a genuine chore depending on what you choose.

Why substrate choice matters

Different reptiles need very different humidity levels, and substrate is one of the main ways that is managed inside a vivarium — a substrate that holds moisture well suits a species that needs higher humidity, while a drier substrate suits an arid-adapted species far better.

Digging and burrowing species benefit from a substrate deep and loose enough to actually dig into, which is a genuine behavioural need for some reptiles rather than an added extra.

Matching substrate to species

Check what your specific reptile needs rather than assuming one substrate suits all — the humidity, digging behaviour and even ingestion risk during feeding vary a great deal between species, and getting it wrong can affect health over time rather than just appearance.

Depth matters as much as type for a burrowing species, so check the recommended depth for your reptile rather than adding a thin, decorative layer that looks the part but gives them nothing to actually dig into.

Keeping it clean

Spot-clean waste daily regardless of substrate type, and do a fuller substrate change on a schedule suited to the material — some substrates need changing more often than others to avoid bacterial build-up in a warm, humid environment.

Watch for substrate that is consistently damp or smells off between scheduled changes, since that is usually a sign it needs replacing sooner than planned rather than waiting out the normal cycle.
