Specifications

Brand: Komodo

Full description

A tortoise's shell is built from the calcium in its diet, which is why Komodo pitch this food on its calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 3.5:1 rather than just a flavour. It is a holistic diet formulated for popular pet tortoise species, high in fibre, and free of artificial additives, preservatives, flavours or colours.

Komodo say it can be fed dry or wet — adding a little water brings out the flavour — and it is best served in small portions rather than a large amount left down. It is sold here in 170g, 340g and 680g tubs, to suit anything from a tasting pot for a hatchling to a bigger appetite in an adult tortoise.

On what's not quantified. No protein, fat or specific fibre percentage is published for this diet — only the fibre and calcium-to-phosphorus emphasis. If you need an exact nutritional breakdown for a specific tortoise species, this pack does not give you the figures to check it against.

Who it's for: tortoise keepers who want a calcium-forward, high-fibre diet across a range of pack sizes, from a small tasting pot for a hatchling to a larger tub for an adult.

Why we chose it

The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is the actual reason to choose a dedicated tortoise diet over a generic reptile food — shell health depends on getting that balance right, not just on fibre content. Being able to buy it from a small tasting pot up to a 2kg tub also means you're not committing to a large size before knowing if a tortoise takes to it.
