Chicken Feed & Poultry Food
Feathered friends, well looked after.
Feed hens by stage: chick crumbs for chicks, a grower feed as they develop, then layers pellets or mash once they come into lay. Layers feed should be most of what a laying hen eats. Corn and treats are extras, and grit helps hens grind their food.
Our quick picks
In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

Best for chicks
Argo Baby Chick Crumbs
Why we picked it
A non-medicated starter crumb is the right call if you're not dealing with a coccidiosis risk that needs a medicated feed, and Argo's four to six week window gives a clear point to move a chick onto a grower feed. Being suitable across several poultry species rather than chickens only is genuinely useful if you're rearing a mixed brood.

Best grit
Mr Johnson's Poultry Grit
Why we picked it
Grit is one of those unglamorous basics that a flock genuinely needs and a lot of new keepers do not think to buy until someone tells them to. A 1kg bag is a manageable size to keep topped up without overbuying.

Best hen treat
Hentastic Cluck Butter Herby
Why we picked it
It's one of the few chicken treats fed through a device rather than just scattered on the ground, which is genuinely useful when the goal is enrichment rather than more food in the run. The herb and seaweed mix in it is also a step up from a plain seed treat.

A little guidance
What to feed hens, by age
| Stage | Feed | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chicks, first weeks | Chick crumbs | Small, protein-rich and easy to eat. |
| Growing pullets | Growers pellets | Supports growth without pushing them into lay too soon. |
| Laying hens | Layers pellets or mash | Balanced with the calcium needed for strong shells. |
| Treat time | Mixed corn, a little, late in the day | Energy and something to scratch for, not a main meal. |
Layers feed is the main meal
A laying hen puts a lot of calcium into every shell, and layers pellets are balanced for it. Keep them available all day in a covered feeder, and let corn and treats stay small.
Too many treats crowd out the balanced feed, which can mean thin shells and fewer eggs.
Grit and oyster shell do different jobs
Chickens have no teeth: insoluble grit sits in the gizzard and grinds food. Free-range hens pick some up, but hens kept on a run or eating whole grain need a supply.
Oyster shell or a calcium supplement is extra calcium for layers, which matters if shells are thin. Offer both in separate pots so hens can take what they need.
Do not feed kitchen scraps
UK animal by-product rules mean kitchen and table scraps must not be fed to chickens, including backyard pets. Scraps can carry diseases that affect poultry and other livestock.
Stick to feeds and treats made for poultry, and keep feed covered so wild birds and rodents cannot reach it.
Register your birds
In Great Britain, everyone who keeps poultry must register their birds with the government, even a small backyard flock. It means you can be contacted about disease outbreaks such as bird flu.
Keep fresh water available at all times; hens drink a lot, and egg production drops quickly without it. Clean drinkers often, and protect them from freezing in winter.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
What should I feed laying hens?
Layers pellets or mash as the main diet, available all day, with fresh water, grit and only small amounts of corn or treats.
When do chicks move to layers pellets?
After chick crumbs and growers feed, when the hens come into lay. Follow the age guidance on each feed.
Can chickens eat kitchen scraps?
No. UK rules forbid feeding kitchen scraps to poultry, including backyard hens.
