Full description
A day-old chick cannot manage the same feed a grown bird eats — its beak and gut are built for something much smaller, which is why starter feeds come as a fine crumb rather than a pellet, small enough for a chick to peck and swallow from the first day.
This is Argo's chick starter crumb, built from wheat, soya (produced from genetically modified soya beans), maize bran, wheatfeed, molasses, vitamins and minerals, a binder (E565) and calcium carbonate. It's non-medicated, and Argo's own guidance is to feed it ad-lib — food available at all times rather than at set meals — from hatching up to four to six weeks of age.
- Crude oil 3%, crude protein 18%, crude fibre 5%, crude ash 6%
- Non-medicated
- Fed ad-lib from hatching to 4-6 weeks of age
- Also suitable for Bantams, Quail, Game Birds, Ducks and other fancy breed chicks
- 5kg or 20kg sack
On the "quail" tag on this card. Our own data briefly listed quail as a protein source for this feed, which doesn't match the ingredient list above — there's no quail meat in it. Quail chicks are simply one of the species Argo say can be reared on this crumb, alongside bantams, game birds and ducklings, not an ingredient.
Who it's for: anyone hand-rearing or brooding chicks — of chickens, bantams, quail, game birds or ducks — from hatching through the first four to six weeks.

Why we chose it
A non-medicated starter crumb is the right call if you're not dealing with a coccidiosis risk that needs a medicated feed, and Argo's four to six week window gives a clear point to move a chick onto a grower feed. Being suitable across several poultry species rather than chickens only is genuinely useful if you're rearing a mixed brood.
