A hen has no teeth, so whatever it swallows whole has to be broken down somewhere else — the gizzard does that job, but only if there is something hard in there to grind against. Grit is that something, and without it a hen's digestion is working harder than it needs to.

Mr Johnson's Poultry Grit is a natural, insoluble grit sold in a 1kg bag, intended to sit alongside a hen's usual feed rather than replace any part of it.
