Self-Moving Dog Balls
Playtime, all the time.
A self-moving ball rolls, bounces or changes direction on its own, so your dog has something to chase without you throwing it. Some run as soon as they are switched on; others wait and start when your dog comes near. Most charge by USB.

Best all-round self-moving ball
Self-Moving Dog Ball, Rolls On Its Own, Rechargeable
Why we picked it
A moving dog ball does the throwing for you: it rolls off on its own and sets off a chase, and the E-TPU shell stands up to mouthing better than hard plastic.

Best motion-activated ball
Motion-Activated Dog Ball, Starts When Your Dog Comes Near
Why we picked it
It rolls off and changes direction when it senses movement, so a game can start without anyone in the room. Quiet, which matters in a flat where a clattering hard-plastic toy would not do. It will not fix genuine separation anxiety.

A little guidance
Which kind of moving ball?
Pick by your dog and your floor. A light, fast ball suits a small dog on a hard floor; a tougher ball suits a bigger dog or the garden. Play together at first, and put the ball away when the game is over.
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Always rolling | Rolls and changes direction on its own once switched on, until it is switched off or the battery runs down | A dog who loves to chase and can play while you watch |
| Motion-activated | Rests until your dog touches it or comes near, then starts to move | Shorter bursts of play, and saving battery between games |
| Remote-controlled | You steer it, so you decide where it goes and when it stops | Playing together, and keeping the game away from furniture |
What a self-moving ball is for
It gives a dog something to chase indoors on a wet day, or in the garden when you cannot keep throwing. The ball moves in a way a dog cannot predict, which keeps the game interesting for longer than a still toy.
It is not a babysitter. It is a toy to use with you nearby, in short sessions, then put away.
Choosing the right one
Check the size against your dog's mouth: the ball should be too big to swallow. A dog who chews hard will break a ball with a motor in it, so pick a tougher model or keep it for chase games only.
Look at how each product charges and how long it runs, and whether it is meant for indoors, the garden or both.

Common questions
Can I leave my dog alone with a self-moving ball?
No. Supervise play, and take the ball away if your dog starts chewing it. A ball with a motor and a battery inside is not a chew toy, and a broken one should not be left with a dog.
How do I charge it?
Most are USB rechargeable, so they charge from a phone plug or a laptop. Check each product for how it charges and how long a charge lasts, and keep the charging port clean and dry.
Will my dog be scared of it?
Some dogs bark or back off the first time. Start with the ball still, let your dog sniff it, then switch it on and reward any interest. Keep the first sessions short.
