A ball that only moves when it is thrown is only as good as the arm throwing it. This self-moving dog ball sets itself going: switch it on, put it down, and it rolls off on its own, which is the part that turns a dog from watching into chasing. For a dog that brings you the same ball forty times an evening, it takes some of that job off your hands.

The shell is E-TPU, a light, springy foam-like material that gives under the teeth rather than cracking, so it stands up to mouthing far better than a hard plastic ball. At about 8cm across it is made for larger dogs. It charges by USB-C, and the maker quotes around 50 minutes on charge for up to four hours of play. It is rated IP54, which means it shrugs off splashes and damp grass, so it works on a kitchen floor or out on the lawn.

• Self-moving dog ball that rolls on its own to set off a chase
• Chew-resistant E-TPU shell
• About 8cm across, made for larger dogs
• USB-C rechargeable: about 50 minutes on charge for up to 4 hours of play
• IP54 splash-resistant for indoor and outdoor play
• Four colours: red, blue, white and blue, or white and orange

Chew-resistant is not chew-proof. E-TPU takes a lot of mouthing, but a determined chewer left alone with any electronic toy can get into it. Use it for supervised play, take it away when the game turns into gnawing, and don't submerge it: IP54 covers splashes, not a dip in the pond.

Who it's for: larger dogs with more energy than the evening has throws in it, and dogs that need something to chase indoors on a wet day.
