Specifications

Brand: Mr Johnson's

Full description

A laying hen puts a surprising amount of calcium into every egg she produces, day after day, and an ordinary grower feed isn't built to keep up with that — which is the reason a dedicated layer feed exists at all.

This is a 5kg bag of pellet-form feed from Mr Johnson's, described as a natural, balanced and nutritious diet for poultry. It's sold in pellet rather than crumb or loose grain form, and the maker has not broken out a calcium, protein or fat analysis for it.

What the label does not say. A layer feed's whole point is usually a raised calcium level to support eggshell production, but Mr Johnson's haven't given us a calcium percentage — or any other analytical figure — on this card, so we can't confirm how it compares to a standard feed on that specific measure.

Who it's for: keepers of laying hens wanting a dedicated pellet feed, rather than a general poultry mix or a grower feed intended for younger birds.

Common questions

What's the calcium content?

Mr Johnson's haven't published a calcium figure for this feed, though layer feeds are generally formulated with laying hens' calcium needs in mind.

Is this a pellet or a crumb?

Pellet.

How is it sold?

In a 5kg bag.

Is this suitable for young or growing birds?

It's named as a layer feed, which is generally aimed at hens that are laying rather than growing birds — check a grower feed for younger poultry.

Mr Johnson's Natural Layer Pellets

Why we chose it

Pellet form is easier to keep consistent than a loose mix, since a hen can't sort through a pellet the way she can pick through grain. A 5kg bag is also a manageable size for a domestic flock rather than a trade sack.
