Specifications

Brand: Mr Johnson's

Full description

A chick pecking at crumb-sized feed is working with a beak and a digestive system built for something far smaller than a full-grown hen's diet, which is why starter feeds come in a fine crumb rather than a pellet — it is a texture decision as much as a nutritional one.

This is a 5kg bag of crumb-form poultry feed from Mr Johnson's. The maker has not broken out a protein, fat or fibre analysis for this product, and there is no minimum age stated on the card beyond what the crumb texture and the product name imply.

What the label does not say. Despite the name, nothing on the card confirms an exact age range for "chick" feed, nor a protein or fibre percentage — the makers have supplied the pack size and texture only. If you are managing a mixed-age flock, it is worth checking that against what you already feed before switching everything over to crumb.

Who it's for: keepers with chicks or young birds in the flock who need a fine-textured starter feed, and anyone restocking poultry feed in a 5kg bag.

Common questions

Is this suitable for adult hens too?

The card does not specify an age cut-off beyond the crumb texture itself, which is generally used for chicks and younger birds; check your flock's needs before switching entirely.

What is the protein content?

Mr Johnson's have not published a protein, fat or fibre breakdown for this feed on the information we hold.

How is it sold?

In a 5kg bag.

Is it a pellet or a crumb?

Crumb — a finer texture than a pellet, which is the point of a starter-style feed.

Mr Johnson's Chick Crumb

Why we chose it

Crumb feed is the obvious choice the moment you have chicks in with the flock, because a pellet is simply too big for a small beak. It comes in a manageable 5kg bag rather than a sack you need a trolley for.
