Boredom in a flock shows up as feather-pecking and other habits nobody wants to deal with, so anything that gives chickens something to work at — rather than simply eating a treat in one go — is doing a behavioural job as much as a feeding one.

Hentastic's Cluck Butter is a spread built from premium vegetable fat, British flour, mixed seeds and a small amount of herbs, supplied in a reusable, easy-to-clean feeder designed for outdoor use. Despite the "butter" in the name, no peanuts or other nut ingredient is listed — the spread is built on vegetable fat rather than a nut base.

On the name. "Cluck Butter" suggests a peanut-butter-style treat, but no peanuts or other nuts appear in the ingredients we've been given — it's a vegetable fat, flour and seed spread rather than a nut butter, which is worth knowing if you were buying it specifically as a peanut treat.

Who it's for: keepers of backyard or free-range chickens who want an enrichment treat that takes some effort to get through, in a feeder designed to be reused rather than thrown away.
