Wild Bird Food

Feathered friends, well looked after.

Different garden birds want different food: sunflower hearts and seed mixes for finches and tits, suet and fat balls for winter energy, soft food for robins and blackbirds on the ground. Feeding all year round helps, as long as feeders are kept clean.

Everyday care for every bird.

Our quick picks

In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

  • Sunflower Hearts

    Best all-round seed

    Sunflower Hearts

    Why we picked it

No husks to sweep up is a genuinely practical reason to pay more for a dehusked seed over a standard sunflower mix, particularly if the feeder sits over a patio. Being usable across hanging, table and ground feeders also means one bag covers however you already feed.

Honeyfields Simply Suet Pellets with Insects

    Why we picked it

490 kcal per 100g is the number that matters in January, and pellets are far less fuss than balls or blocks — no nets, no cages, straight into whatever you already have. Just do not buy it expecting an insect food.

  • Peckish Complete Seed

    Best complete seed mix

    Peckish Complete Seed

    Why we picked it

The husk-free formula is the practical reason to stock this one. It means less waste under the feeder, and it suits birds that struggle with a husk more easily than a plain mixed seed does.

Clean feeders protect birds

The RSPB advises cleaning feeders and bird tables regularly and moving them now and then, because birds crowding around dirty feeders spread disease. Wear gloves and rinse well.

Do not let food build up. Put out what the birds will eat in a day or two, and clear away anything mouldy.

Take fat balls out of nets

Birds can catch their feet or tongues in mesh nets. Use a fat ball feeder instead, and buy fat balls sold without nets where you can.

Whole peanuts are a choking risk for chicks in spring and summer. Offer them only in a mesh peanut feeder that birds must peck through.

Feeding through the year

Winter food helps birds through cold nights, but spring and summer matter too, when adults are feeding young. High-energy suet in winter and seed and insect foods in summer is a simple pattern.

Avoid salted, cooked or spicy leftovers, and keep bread to a minimum: it fills birds up without much nutrition. Ducks and swans are better fed with waterfowl pellets.

Water and safety

A shallow dish of clean water is as useful as food, especially in freezing weather and hot spells. Change it often.

Place feeders near cover so birds can escape predators, but not so close that cats can hide and pounce. Store bird food in sealed containers to keep it dry and away from rodents.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

What is the best food for garden birds?

Sunflower hearts suit the widest range of birds with little mess. Add suet in winter and a seed mix for variety.

Should I feed birds all year round?

Yes. Food helps in winter and when adults are feeding young. Keep feeders clean.

Can I feed bread to ducks?

Bread has little nutritional value. Waterfowl pellets or seed are better for ducks and swans.
